Belemnite Fossil neck-piece

This fossil is of an extinct squid-like marine animal called an orthoceras, of the Ordovician to Silurian periods about 400-500 million years old. I liked the way the fossil lay diagonally on the pointed ellipse of the stone.

Natural objects of great beauty need little enhancement. The neck-piece is made from one piece of forged silver.

In ancient times belemnites were considered to be thunderbolts, hurled down from the heavens by the deity Jupiter. Jupiter was supposed to determine the course of human affairs. Perhaps this thunderbolt, suspended above a cleavage, may also influence human affairs!
